Item # 120 120 Shelf clock, a good second period English Lantern clock purchased by Mr. Gingrich as by William Sellwood London c. 1650. Special note: The following information supplied by seller to Mr. Gingrich and to be decision of the buyer as to its validity – additional paperwork with repair work, details go with: The 13” clock (height to top of bell strap) is a good example of a second period lantern clock, with time, strike and originally, alarm. Like virtually all lantern clocks, the escapement has been converted from balance wheel to, in this case, anchor. In so doing, the alarm work has removed from the back plate although the hole where the lifting piece originally sat can still be seen to the left of ‘XI’ on the chapter ring. The conversion was well done and the original holes where the balance was mounted still exist so that reconversion would be relatively straightforward. The floral decoration on the dial plate and the style of the chapter ring and hand are virtually identical to other second period lantern clocks of 1640-1650. See, for example, page 134 of George White’s book, ‘The English Lantern Clock’. The clock is signed on the base of the front fret, ‘William Sellwood at ye Mermayd in Lothbury’. Sellwood is one of the best known and most sought after makers of early lantern clocks. Among his apprentices were some of the most famous makers including Loomes and Knifton. He was free of the Clockmaker’s Company in 1633 and died in 1653. The clock was formerly in the Willis R. Michael collection where it resided at least the last fifty years. |
